Today, the high sales of popular consumer goods
reflect the power of advertising and not the real needs of the society in which
they are sold. To what extend do you agree.
In no other time in history have people witnessed such
high volume of products being purchased globally. This might be readily
attributed to the numerous commercials. Nevertheless, it is collectively deemed
that advertisements fail to cater for consumers’ real needs but rather reflect
the power of itself. Rationality of this assertion will be ramified as how
consumers suffer and what the real necessity means.
On the one hand, consumers easily fall into the trap
of glamorous commercials, especially those cosmetic companies that employ
gorgeous celebrities. Take L’Oreal for example, elegant film stars can frequently
be seen in their advertisements with the purpose of creating such an illusion
that consumers may be as attractive as those celebrities are after using their
products. More often than not, however, commercials are merely the culprits behind
which lead to consumer disappointment. Because of this, consumer
dissatisfaction and commercials are inextricably linked.
On the other hand, consumers would buy the product had
they thought that it is good value for money. For instance, seldom do people
see Apple furiously advertise their products, but it seems that everyone knows and
desires to purchase its i-series products, such as iPhone, iPad or iPod. Thus, it
is goods themselves rather than commercials that persuade people to pay. From
this example it has been proved that customers’ needs could be satisfied even in
absence of commercials.
To recapitulate, after analysing consumers’ sufferance
and their real needs, the inability of advertisements to fulfil customers’
needs has been proven. Consequently, it is recommended that advertisers would
better focus on the quality of their products and consumers would better be more
rational when making their decisions.
